Epoxy Resin – the Superior Choice

Thermosetting polymers like epoxy resin, provide superior adhesive, reinforcement and encapsulating properties for use in a variety of artistic, residential furnishings and industrial applications. From coatings in home craft and bar and tabletop creation – to binders and adhesives in boat construction and repair, as well as sealing industrial flooring and other applications; epoxy resin provides a durable and high-performance finish for years of use.

Epoxy resin has many distinct advantages over other composites that make it the perfect material for a great many applications. Its waterproofing properties and resistance to moisture make it the perfect material for use in the boatbuilding and industrial construction industries. Epoxy resin is used to reinforce plastics and fiberglass, and may be adapted to any substrate for walls and flooring in buildings.

As an adhesive and reinforcing material, epoxy resin literally covers a wide range of materials such as metals, plastics, wood carbon fiber and fiberglass. The advantageous properties of its superior adhesion, low shrinkage during hardening, and durability – all while offering resistance to thermal stress and resistance to degradation over time – make it the recommended polymer for use in most industrial environments against corrosion.

Epoxy Resin Properties

The mechanical properties of epoxy resin lend themselves to three distinct areas of performance; adhesion, toughness and environmental resistance. “High adhesion between resin and reinforcement fibers is necessary for any resin system. This will ensure that the loads are transferred efficiently and will prevent cracking or fiber / resin debonding when stressed.

“Toughness is a measure of a material’s resistance to crack propagation, but in a composite this can be hard to measure accurately. However, the stress/strain curve of the resin system on its own provides some indication of the material’s toughness. Good resistance to the environment, water and other aggressive substances, together with an ability to withstand constant stress cycling, are properties essential to any resin system. These properties are particularly important for use in a marine environment,” writes David Cripps of (an industrial developer of composite systems) in ‘Resin Systems.’

The practical applications of epoxy resin are myriad due to the many high-performance qualities of this thermosetting composite. From DIY art epoxy and home improvement projects to commercial and industrial uses; epoxy’s adhesive, strength and resistant qualities really shine. (As does its finish – pun intended!)
